I think that music has the power to unite. But at the same time it can drive them further apart. In the case of hip hop i think that it unites the races its focuced at. From my take of the discussion it furthered the races. I say this because black hip hop artist do not like that white kids are listening and getting into there music. It seems to me that it is ment for people like them, people with the same intrests same hobbies and same color. Now dont get me wrong there are many that dont apply but as I said earlyer it can unite the groups its focused at but can discourage others. Now it can be said about the other side white hip hop artists and how they could not want a black aduence. So i do think that it furthers races because some people look at things with a black and white shutter over there eyes. But as long as types of music belong to certin races and cant be spread through groups it will further them apart.
In my opinion, there are two types of hip-hop; there's the hip-hop that's just out there to make money, and then there's the real, true hip-hop that is out to convey a message and a different side of life that may not be seen or understood by most white people.
The let's-just-make-money hip-hop in my opinion divides the races. Much of that is just plain garbage talking about the money, women, fame, cars, motorcycles e.t.c. Some people embrace it, while other people find it vile, digusting, and a bunch of trash. This is where people start to disagree about what's good and what's horrific.
The true hip-hop teaches the lesson of how hard life really is and the real things people see day to day. People from all races can see how life is for certain people and really respect a lifestyle that is hard and dangerous and a way to survive, not just glitzy bullcrap that is written just to sell an x amount of records.
From what Tom said about black artists not wanting white kids to listen and get into their music, I can see where they are coming from.
Black artists made and used hip-hop to unite and find a way to convey their feelings, lives, and struggles to an audience that understood them and was the same "kind" as them. Having white kids listen to their music somewhat clouds what hip-hop's real purpose was. Most black artists believe that white kids will never understand hip-hop and what that lifestyle really is. Hip-hop saved a lot of people from going under and united a race that was picked apart and dissed for many many years.
Music has the abilty to unite or divide, but there is no way you can satisfy every single person or race.
In my opinion, people should just do whatever the hell they want, and listen to whatever the hell they want.
I definitely agree with what Ola said about the two types of hip hop.
some are there to influence others and share the world's hardships while others are there to provoke others; music like this can offend many and that's why hip hop divides races. Not everyone likes hip hop i know of songs which are known to separate races on purpose just based on the words they put into the songs. Music like this divides the races because obviously the public listens to them and interpret them in the same way meaning that they share the same words as in the songs.
i think that hip hop unites people because even through there are way more black rappers and they started the whole rapping culture. Whites are allowed in. Even know more whites sing other types of music many are part of the hip hop culture
I believe that music has the power to bring people together becuase no matter what race or ethnicity you are you can still enoy the lyrics of a song. People can listen to whatever they want no matter what color they are.
I think rappers and singers say they want to unite races with this music but most songs really drive them apart. Most songs is about how white people are always trying to way down the "black man". I think that hip-hop lyrics are a little to explicit now-a-days. Most hip-hop lyrics are about shooting, killing, robbing, smoking, money, disrespecting women, and the list continues. Some carry a good message across but most songs are annoying and about stuff. A good example of this is soulja boy and his songs, most of his songs are degrading to women and just stupid.
I believe what was said in the article read in class, that hip hop is uniting the races under false pretenses. I believe this because normally in hip hop what you see is the artist being Back, and the audience being mixed, with a very diverse audience. For me this says that hip hop isn't really uniting anyone because if it was rappers wouldn't be predominately black, and white rappers or any other race of rappers for that matter, wouldn't have such a hard time getting into the hip hop industry.
In my personal opinion, the culture of HIP-HOP divides races. For instance, if I, as a white person, were to blast HIP-HOP music while driving down the street, there is no doubt about it that I would get looks from other drivers. The drivers could possibly be black or white and they would both be thinking, "who are you to be listneing to that music." The black people might be angered because that music is not meant for me, in their eyes we have our own music, which is rock. The white person might think, why are you listening to their music. This was basically the situation of the main character in the story "Guarding the Boarders of Hip-Hop nation". Although all of this is terribly racisist and catagorizing people is wrong, this does happen and it does divide races whether you agree or not.
I have always believed that music has the power to do many things. And although many people may say positive things that music does, it does have it's drawbacks. Music, like many other things, comes with stereotypes. For instance; people who listen to indie rock are automatically considered people who smoke pot or do drugs. People who listen to rap are automatically considered ghetto. I know for a fact that these stereotypes are not true but thats what music provides. Another reason to sterotype. So, because of this, the hip hop nation comes with its stereotype. WIth stereotypes comes the people that want to be stuck in the stereotype or the ones that want to defy it. In the hip hop nation, there are people that are welcoming to different races and it can be a uniting thing but, for as many people that unite, there are 10 more that dont want to unite.
i belive that hip hop nation definitly dose bring races together.in fact i think that all musice brings any one that likes that type of music together.i know this because i have been to hip hop concerts and country concertsy and you make friends with every on that is there unless some how you have a problem with the person.but music does divide in age instead of race. from hereing people talk it does divide race when it came to the young of one ace and the old of another race.also the nation of hip hop has its own fad or fashin which brings them together and other catchy fads.
I think HIP-HOP has united the races because many people love to sing and love to dance and express themselves. HIP-HOP isn’t just for American Americans because white people have also come to love it and many white people can perform it just as well. Other minority groups have joined in too. When all these different races begin to sing and dance together new friends are made. Also, listeners hear the messages behind the songs and many times begin to understand other people’s feelings and dreams, many of which are the same as theirs and so they can begin to see and treat people of different races as equals.
I agree with tom when he says that music has the power to unite. in the 1930's jazz was a huge aspect of the times. people came together and rejoiced the times. in the day of rap and hip hop i think it has further diveds the races. in todays culture you are looked down apon if you try to get deep with hip hop. the music of rap may unite the black community but it splits up the black and white races. one of the reasons why it divides the races is because of the lack of understanding. white people just dont go throught the same events that black people have faced. its just very hard for white people to relate to hip hop if they havent expierenced the events that are expressed in the lyrics.
