Final Blog...

Before you answer this know two things -
1) This is worth 10 Points
2) You have until 11:59:59 on Monday January 18th to answer this question - absolutely no exceptions!
After finishing the course work in this class please list for me the top three (3) subjects that you enjoied studying most and explain why. If you feel that there is a topic that is not currently covered in the curriculum and would be a positive addition to the course please share that. Thanks for a solid semester and good luck in the latter half of your senior year. All my best - Mr. B.

The top three subjects that i enjoyed in this course was: Deviance because you kind of had a chance to understand the crime system a little bit more. you got to know which crime was labeled as a minor or major crime. the second subject i liked was gender, even though we didnt spend too much time on it I think the project we had to do with the childrens book was creative and fun to do. The next Subject I liked was Race and Ethnicity. i think that it was a good subject because it gave many students a chance to think about how we view eachothers race and ethnicity and being able to tackle racism and break it down. Also what I enjoyed most was viewing American History X, I did not see until this class and now I think that it is one of the best movies Ive seen along with a few others. I think every subject in a way is still relevant to todays society so I wouldn't change anything.

The top three subjects that i enjoyed this year in sociology were Deviance/Crimes in America, Race/Ethnicity in America, and Gender Roles in America. Under the subject of Deviance and Crimes, I had a chance to understand how one commits an act of deviance, and how they are able to gain rehabilitation. Viewing the movie Shawshank redemption was very helpful in my understanding in deviance and rehabilitation. Under the subject of Race and Ethnicity, I learned the difference between the two, and my favorite part of this section was watching American History X. I had a better understanding of Skinhead culture, and it taught me that hate doesn't make your life any better. I also enjoyed the Gender Role subject. The Little boys and Little girls books that we made were very enjoyable, and not only was it fun but it showed us how society has changed over time on the equality of women. The topics covered in this curriculum are very interesting, and the movies that were shown were perfect examples of every topic that we covered. I enjoyed this class very much, and all the subjects are great.

I liked the majority of the topics that we covered in class so it is hard to pick just three. but the three that stuck out most to me where: the difference between race and ethnicity, the history of hate in the USA, and crime and deviance. The difference between race and ethnicity stuck out the most for me because it opened my eyes to see that there are still a lot of people in the world that are racist. When we did that opening activity it was hard to tell what that persons race just by looking at them. This activity really showed me that society has set standards for how someone should look if they are of a certain race, and that we as a society still judge people from those standards. Another topic that I liked was when we learned about the History of Hate in the USA. After watching the movie "Skinheads USA" it made me more aware of our culture and how and why we hate, and how there are some that still hate today. The final topic that i liked was crime and deviance. I now have a better understanding of what is considered by society deviant, and what isn't. These were just some of the topics that I enjoyed throughout this year, and I feel that the topics we covered were perfect and we didn't leave any uncovered.

the top three topics i enjoyed studying most were deviance, race and ethnicity, and hate in the USA. Deviance was intersesting because i was never aware of the different levels of crime and various social perspectives we were taught about. The unit on race and ethnicity was also very eye opening for me because i actually learned the difference between the two and it is a subject that has always caught my attention when it is brought up. Also, getting to watch American History X in school was a serious plus. Finally the history of hate was also very intersesting to me. Learning the history and differences between the KKK and skinheads was something i'm glad i learned about, and am now more knowledgable about. All the topics we studied in this class were very intersesting to me and i actually really enjoyed this class.

All together, I enjoyed the class, Sociology. This was one of the few classes that I didn't have the thought "why am I here." (: I enjoyed most of the subjects studied, but my favorite three were, deviance, race/ethnicity in America, and gender roles. I enjoyed deviance, because it was relevant to society today, this subject allowed me to know the different types of crimes and punishments, as well as being rehabilitated. Overall this subject widened my knowledge about deviance. To go along with the subject deviance I enjoyed the movie Crash, it was relevant to the subject, as well as entertaining. The Race and Ethnicity unit was my favorite, there were many eye opening exercises, such as judging people based on appearance, which most people do, this exercise and unit taught me the true meaning of not judging a book by its cover. One of my favorite movies was also involved in this unit, American History X. I believe that movie should be shown to the whole high school, to open the eyes of everyone, including teachers and staff. The gender roles unit was also fun because we had a chance to write a children’s book. Sociology, is a chance for students to gain knowledge while expanding their social imagination and creativity. I WOULDNT CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THIS COURSE (; it should be a full year course!!

After completing this sociology course, I would say that my favorite top 3 things learned would be gender roles, race and ethnicity and deviance.
Gender roles were very interesting to learn about. I learned many things that i was unaware of. I always knew there was a difference between men and women in the workforce; but there were several things in this unit that shocked me. I had no idea that men make more than women in most jobs. It seemed almost unfair to me and really surprised me. I had no idea how little respect there was for women as little as only 50 years back. Women had very little say in the world and throughout the gender roles unit I learned that it is quickly changing. Women are beginning to have a big impact in politics and in jobs that once only were allowed for men. This gender roles unit was very interesting and opened my eyes.
The race and ethnicity unit was my favorite unit of all. Throughout this unit i was constantly being surprised and given information I was unaware of. I knew that there were hate groups and many racist people in the world, but i had no idea how serious it was and is. Some of the things we read and watched such as the Denny case and American History X really surprised me. This course made me really have a strong passion against racist people and made me realize how wrong racism is. I also loved the movie America History X. Prior to this unit I would have no interest in watching a movie like this. After watching the movie, i would say it was one of the best movies i have ever seen. It really gave of a visual of a skin head group in action and was a great way to wrap up racism in our world. I enjoyed watching the movies, clips and reading articles in this unit.
My 3rd favorite thing that we learned in this course was deviance. It was interesting to see what people thought about what is wrong and what is right. This unit once again opened my eyes and showed me things i was unaware of. I realized that many deviant acts are committed by non deviant people. The movie Shawshank Redemption was amazing and is another movie that has become one of my favorites. Through this unit along with all the others, you provided many videos and articles that really held my attention. I enjoyed this half semester and would love to take another sociology class another time at some point in my college years.

After finishing sociology, my favorite three units would have to be race and ethnicity, deviance, and gender roles.
Race and ethnicity was probably my most favorite unit that we learned about because I was really surprised to learn about all the hate groups in America. I only really knew about the KKK and then when learning about all the other hate groups it was very surprising to me that there are these kind of people in the world today. I was also very interested when we learned about the Denney and King cases. I always heard about Rodney King but never really knew the story about him. Also watching American History X was very mind opening. I thought it was a really good movie and kind of openend my eyes to feel alot more strongly about racism and how it is a very terrible thing. Overall i really enjoyed this unit alot.
Deviance was also a very interesting unit. It really got me thinking about deviance in our world today. I thought it was intersting to learn how everyone in some way whether it be in a big way or little way can be deviant. I really enjoyed watching the Shawshank Redemption. It was a great movie to watch during this unit and I really enjoyed it.
Finally the last unit I enjoyed was gender roles. Although I knew that there was always a stereotypical difference between men and women, I never knew that there was still a difference in wages and that in some workplaces men got paid more than women. That was a shock to me and I think its totally wrong and unfair. I liked making the childrens books and seeing how everyone thought of men and women and their message at the end. It was very interesting unit. I really enjoyed all the movies and units that we saw and learned about throughout sociology this semester. Im always going to remember the intersting stuff that I have learned in this class.

After thinking about what my favorite topics in this class were, i came to the conclusion that race and ethnicity, deviance and gender roles were my favorite things to learn about. I enjoyed learning about race and ethnicity because it really showed us that the terms we use when refering to people arent always accurate or acceptable. I also liked this topic because the movies we watched showed us that racism still runs in our country and it always will no matter what. I enjoyed learning about deviance simply for the fact that we got to have a better understanding of what we do in society and if its acceptable or not. A lot of the things we do in society arent acceptable which really made this fun to learn about. Lastly, i liked gender roles because hearing about things back in the 50's and 60's made me laugh and how it was acceptable then but now a days people would think your crazy to have those beliefs.I enojoyed this class and all it had to offer but i would change one thing. Id say that this class would be much better if it was a full year course. All the topics are fun to learn and the projects make the class much easier to deal with. I guess the teacher isnt so bad either.

The top three subject matter or curriculum that i found to be most interesting or most important would have to be Race and Ethnicity, Deviance and Crimes, and Gender Roles.
Wanting to be a police officer sometime in the future, it was good that I was able to get an idea of how the criminal system works, and to understand the different types of crimes that were studied in this course. With the different types of crimes such as "white collar, crimes to property, crimes to oneself", and many others, and how they are broken up into 1st degree and 2nd degree, really helps me toward the path to become a police officer. Watching the movies about deviance, such as "Shawshank Redemption, Minority Report", was also very effective in seeing what we were taught in class in everyday life.
The next topic that was taught which I found to be very interesting would have to be race and ethnicity. One of the most underrated topics in society today. Race and ethnicity are almost avoided by most people today. I absolutely learned something form this topic. The real definition of a stereotype, and what it really means to be "racist". The video we saw about the experiment with the blue eyes vs. the brown eyes really shows the impact of racism and stereotyping in society. How someone can end up feeling after being told that they're not good enough because they either have blue or brown eyes really opened my eyes to racism in society. It too bad that we didn't have the time to make ourselves into different races on the computer, because it would have been really cool for everyone to see themselves in someone else's shoes.
Finally is the topic of gender. The experiment that we did in class where two people walk from opposite ends of the classroom and see how close they stop before they got close to each other was really cool. It really showed the differences between how men react to men and women, and how women react to themselves and men. Men like to keep space when around other men, but when around women, they seem to be more comfortable whereas women will get right on-top of each other and not mind, and seem somewhat comfortable around other men but not too close.
This course really drew me into the right direction of becoming a police officer. After this class I'm thinking about changing my intended major to Sociology, just because it will really help me understand how people react and why people react in certain situations. To make this course more interesting, you could do a lot more experiments during class like a male checking his fingernails as opposed to a female. and if you could almost tie a psychological aspect to the class and talk about how everything happens that would be cool too. You really did give the class its own twist though. You made boring material and bookwork into an interesting class that made me and everyone else have reason to come into class ready to learn something new.

I really enjoyed deviance, it showed me what can happen when people commit crimes. I thought the movie choice for this section was great. I understand what crimes get what punishment and how each case is tried. Now iknow what can happen if i hear something on the news. Also, the hate group segment was very interesting and enjoyed learning about such horrid acts that happen in todays world. One may think that these things dont happen but with all the ariticles i found i saw that these happen inthe next town over or in some cases newington. I liked the movie here to where American History X really opened my eyes to skinheads and what they do in terrozing the enemies. Also, i enjoyed race and ethniciy part. This showed me the real diffrence becasue they are often confused. I liked crash and the work we had to do for it really helped me understand the movie and how it relates to R & E. it was a good topic becasue students can grow a tolerance for others now because they know what eeach other is going through.

The three topics that i liked were following: Race and Ethnicity because it taught me more about how everyone comes from a different culture, and how everyone is seperated into several different groups. Deviance was another topic that i thought was very interesting because it was fun to learn more about crimes, and how different crimes labeled differently. I learned that all the crimes have different standards and it has different causes in different situations. Gender was another topic that i liked because it shows how everyone is different but the most common once are males, and females. But in those common categories there are some that can not be identified because it can be hurtful to many people with being who they are.

The topic I enjoyed studying the most had to have been crime. The crime unit basically made sociology for me. I want to become a police officer and go out and help people and I know that this isn't going to be my last sociology class. That being so, it probably swayed my opinion of it's importance. Regardless, I do think it's important for everyone to learn about crime in our society and how the justice system works. We live in this country and we should have an understanding of how it works and polices itself, in my opinion.
Secondly I enjoyed studying gender roles and gender discrimination. Being a man, I'm not discriminated against as much as a woman, making me more ignorant of its existence. Before studying this, I knew inequality existed but, was unaware of how much it really effected woman. I had never heard of the glass ceiling and knew women where paid less, but I did not know it was 20% less than men. The gender activity was a bit of an eyeopener for me. I like being more aware of the world around me with each day, than I was the last. It's a good feeling and I think that's why I liked this topic the most.
My third favorite topic had to have been the very first thing we covered. I liked the case study on "nacirema". It set my mind in the sociological perspective and got me ready to really look at and think about the rest of the topics throughout the course. My mind is still that way right now. When I see something on the news, I like to think about the other side, that isn't being reported and how society is influencing how the media should report things (and how the media influences how society should think). Learning the initial key terms helped me later on as well. I found myself thinking about the social norms surrounding a situation, like the Rodney King beating and how it only happened because of the way society was acting around the attackers.
The first unit is what intrigued me in sociology and was the spark that interested me. All of the topics that came afterword seemed to build on each other and I liked the order that we went through them. One thing I did not like however, was that the unit on crime and on race seemed to drag on longer than the others did. I would have liked to have studied ageism but, seeing as I'm going to be going into law enforcement, this wont be my last sociology class and I will probably study that, and more topics much more in depth.(My guess would be that you enjoy teaching the unit on crime and on discrimination and racism the most.)

The top 3 subjects of this class in my opinion were Race and Ethnicity, Deviance, and Hate Groups.

The reason I enjoyed the Race and Ethnicity unit was because it was a very good unit for learning the specific ways in which racism and discrimination impact our daily lives. I have always been very interested in the subject of racism, due to my pre-occupation with stand-up comedy. In comedy it is very important to know where the line lies between telling a funny race joke and telling a racist joke. Learning about discrimination helped me realize in a more clear way where that line lies.

Deviance was also interesting, due to the interest I have in law, and the legal system. By learning about the various parts of the legal system I find myself with a better understanding of my rights as a person, and as an american citizen. I know the degrees of crimes, and the seriousness with which some crimes can be approached.

Lastly, I was very interested in the hate groups unit due to my lack of knowledge about skinheads, most of which I equated with the KKK. Knowing that they are in fact a different entity, and have a far different origin was very enlightening. The video on skinhead culture was also very enlightening, and really clarified why the skinheads still exist as a legitimately powerful group.

A topic I would like to see covered later would be a section on internet hate groups, as they too are rising in power and becoming a somewhat big problem with youths.

Race/Ethnicity was first on my list of my favorite subjects to have studied in the class for the fact that I used what I learned and applied to my life. Now when I or others off the bat judge someone by the way they look or act I rethink maybe I could be wrong about that person; I don’t know their true ethnicity and vice versa. In addition I also really enjoyed the watching American History X because it really opened my eyes on how hate groups really negatively affect the person on both sides of the spectrum.

The subject on Deviance was another area I enjoyed very much. I learned that crimes are committed through deviant and non deviant people. Plus that there is always hope and change for the ones who have committed crimes, which I learned especially through the Shawshank film.

Gender Roles was the subject I wish we had more time to go into depth about. What I did take away from that area was even though we have our differences we need each other. Plus how much gender roles have changed since the fifties and sixties and how today that it doesn’t matter if you are a boy or a girl you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Like a lot of the rest of my piers have already stated I do think this class should be a full year course because I think it could have really gone more in depth in a few areas plus learned a more on different topics that effect our society. In addition I believe that this course should be taken by every student because this subject can really better the lives of students outside the classroom.

After taking this course I would say that the three things that I enjoyed to study the most were the unit on crime, race and ethnicity, and hate groups. All three of these topics are topics that are common to today’s society which, I feel, are one of the reasons that they were the most interesting to me to study.
I found the unit on crime to especially interesting. As an aspiring lawyer it was great to briefly learn the different ways that crime is broken down into. I had no idea that it could break down into so many different categories. The activity that we did where we searched through current day articles for specific crimes also opened my eyes and made me realize how many crimes really do occur everyday. Overall, this unit was definitely a good topic for studying in this class.
Second, I enjoyed the unit on race and ethnicity. This topic is truly a topic that comes up in everyday life, and even around our high school. I feel that this unit opened everyone’s eyes, even if it was just a little bit. I feel that through watching the King and Denny cases we all learned that racism is not just a one way thing and that people from all walks of life can feel it. Because this topic is so controversial and so well known in today’s society it makes it a great topic for studying.
The final topic I would put in my top three subjects I enjoyed studying is hat groups. This is a topic that I found super interesting. I did not realize at all that hate groups were still so common to the people of America. Also, viewing American History X helped to further understand the idea of a hate group. Seeing this movie taught me exactly what a hate group is, but also taught me how bad they were and how hating all your life can ruin your life and hurt your loved ones. Through this movie it also taught me something that is kind of not related to hate groups; this movie taught me that people’s actions affect everyone whether you realize it or not, things are a cycle. This unit was my number one favorite unit to study and I truly feel that it was an interesting topic.
I think that a topic that we could have further discussed was the topic of self-fulfilling prophecy and what it was. I think we would have maybe learned about what makes people do this. I also think that there are a variety of experiments that we could have done that would prove the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy.
Overall, this is a great class and I would recommend it to any one! It was a class that is enjoyable to take and not one that you sit in thinking “why did I do this to myself?” Thanks to you for a great class! (:
